Teacup Maltese

Scooter, a 3-inch-tall Maltese terrier from New Zealand, might be the world's smallest dog. He eats out of an egg cup and sleeps in a shoebox. Sounds like a children's story.

From everything I've ever read or heard from expert dog people, the "teacup" varieties of any breed---usually they've been poodles--have a lot of health concerns and are very delicate. They can break a leg jumping or falling off a couch or bed for example. This is another example of humans breeding an animal for "cuteness" despite what it does to the actual animal.
I have to say I think running this story and photograph are irresponsible. How many people will now go looking for "teacup" versions of some breed that are perfectly good pets in their normal small size?

I would have to concur with Gilly8: I think it is irresponsible to promote the unhealthy (and frankly, irresponsible) breeding of so-called 'teacup' varieties of dogs. The AKC does not recognize the term teacup for any breeds. "Teacups" are often bred from the runt of a litter to the runt of another; resulting in extremely unhealthy animals that people are duped into paying far too much money for. There are plenty of small dogs - not intentionally bred teeny tiny by irresponsible breeders - that are cute. Let's look at some of those, and promote some rescued pups while we are at it!
