Readers' Pets: Jack and Katia

Introduction: Jack was adopted from the SPCA in Boston when he was 5 months old. Katia was adopted from the Raleigh SPCA when she was 2 months old.

Home: Durham, North Carolina

Age: Jack is almost 4 years old and Katia is 8 months. 

Breed: Jack is a domestic short hair tabby and Katia is a tortoise of unknown breed.

Personality: Jack is a loner, though he tolerates Katia. He is independent and I am thrilled he allows me to share the apartment with him. Katia is a spunky, mischievous, playful kitten who is the princess of the house.

Likes: Jack likes napping on the window sill. Katia loves to sit on the kitchen counter and watch all of the birds and squirrels in the yard.

Dislikes: They hate when anyone knocks on the door. They run and hide under the bed. Thunderstorms do not bother them in the slightest however.

Favorite Toy: Jack loves glitter mice and sparkly bouncy balls. Katia loves her fuzzy toys.

Favorite Food: Jack - bits of tuna fish; Katia - a taste of my skim milk when I am done with my cereal in the morning.

Trivia: Jack was named for Captain Jack Sparrow. He was a rough and tumble kitten with huge eyes and big paws and the moniker suited him. Katia was named for Ekaterina Gordeeva (the skater). I was going to name her Colby (Colby and Jack...ha ha), but after having her home for a couple of hours I knew that wouldn't work. She is pixieish and lithe, like Katia Gordeeva. The name definitely suits her.
