Dogs Need Clean Teeth Too

Do you ever think about how horrible your breath would be if you never brushed your teeth? How much tartar would build up? How many cavities would you have? How healthy would your gums be? Well, dogs have teeth too and they need dental care just like you. So, here a few tips to help you keep your canine companion’s teeth as healthy as possible.1. Daily teeth brushing is recommended for all dogs. Be sure to use toothpaste that is specifically formulated for dogs. Human toothpaste is too high in fluoride for dogs and can be fatal if swallowed in large amounts.
2. Feed dry dog foods. It has an abrasive action when chewed which helps clean the teeth. Soft or canned foods tend to stick to the teeth and accumulate bacteria.
3. Dental chews and other oral friendly treats can really help prevent dental disease. CET chews, Greenies, Nutri Dent, Hill’s T/D treats and compressed rawhides are just a few of the many products available.
4. Enzymatic water additives, rinses and sprays are helpful for dogs with more serious dental problems. Your veterinarian can recommend these if they are needed.
5. Regular dental examinations by your veterinarian are a must. Your veterinarian can examine the teeth and alert you to any problems that you may not be aware of.

So, get out your toothbrushes and start brushing! Those doggie kisses will be so much sweeter with a clean mouth!
